  • A manifest file (index.json) is created with each backup with a list of all backup files, along with sizes and checksums to verify the integrity of each backup. Regular backup verification can be scheduled to detect bit rot and confirm backups are safe.
  • The checksum algorithm is also used in deduplication to detect common data between backups of different machines to reduce the storage needs for identical operating systems.
